I cannot knit due to pain in my shoulders but I can use a knitting loom. Does anyone know the rough stitch count for an 8 inch square? I am thinking that the square must "shrink", or draw in, some once taken off the loom. Just wondering how much more space to allow beyond measuring an 8 inch width on the knitting loom pegs. Thanks for any answers.

Cor now there's a question! I've had no interaction with knitting looms at all before! Anyone out there who has?

I am presuming people know a "knitting loom" is a circle or oblong usually in plastic with raised pegs on which you wind the yarn and remove it, in sequence, with a needle or hook. I can crochet and am doing so but thought I'd like to try some knitted squares. It's just a small query, no rush. I only thought if someone knew the shrinkage once you get it off the loom they could say. Of course that might depend on whether you're winding the yarn round the pegs nice and loose or tight like fence wire! I do have those kind of days. ;D Jeanne

Hi Jeanne
My mum (Sandy) heard back from her friend but unfortunately we don't have a very concrete answer for you. She says perhaps about 4 stitches per cm but she says it's very hard to answer because it depends on the type of wool and thickness etc.
I think the best thing to do is just experiment. Keep in mind that we are expecting squares to come in at different sizes anyway so if it's a bit off it doesn't really matter, it will still keep a little kidlet in South Africa warm!
Thanks for your support Jeanne.
Kindest regards
Kalai

Thank you Kalai! Once I remember the "safe spot" I put the looms in I shall start up a square on one right away. I do fret about the squares being 1/4 inch over or under in size so you reassured me there too.

If your squares are 1/4 of an inch under, they can go next to some of mine which are a 1/4 of an inch over.
