i found on the internet a way to recycle yarn from old sweaters--try googling it --shows how to unravel the yarn and soak it to unkink- lots of old wool sweaters in used clothing shops--

My mother used to do this all the time-buy up old sweaters at church thrift sales and unravel them. Usually she'd wrap the yarn, as she unravelled it, over the back of a chair, turning it back into a hank of wool then soak it in cold water and put it back over the chair back to stretch it abit. As it dried the wool would shrink a tiny bit and go tight and straight. Then she'd wind it up into a ball of yarn and knit away. Don't know if this is the recommended way but she learnt it during WW2.
