Okay GTAers, I just got a donation of 5 pairs of needles, sizes 4, 4 1/2, 5 and if I remember correctly one size 6. Plus one set of double pointeds as well, somewhere in that size range (off the top of my head I can't remember) that we can have set out and available at the craft show. I still need hooks, and any yarn. I don't have many full skeins myself, as all my yarn is other peoples scraps, but I plan to wind up into balls the stuff that is of better quality and rather attractive (so people are more willing to use it and it gets their attention) to go into the baskets. We can have more yarn than we have room for in the baskets and just keep filling up the baskets as yarn is depleted - this is of course assuming that this takes off as well as we would like.
Posters and flyers are being printed, a few kettles have been located. I'll deal with the movie and bring my laptop on the day. We have fair trade tea coming in from Kirsten, as well as paper cups. We still need some sort of tea tray for sugar, milk, honey, whatever people put in tea. Also - some stories and photographs of the specific children that we are helping - maybe we should print off that list of children from 10 000 homes who need blankets? having the children's names and photos will drive the point home even better.
I have 57 squares right now, so I plan to sew up a bunch of them into a blanket that we can put on the table so people can see a finished result and understand what they are working towards. If anybody else would like to sew up their squares, or add something else, please feel free to do so.
How about a large jar for postal donations? people can drop off their spare change and we can use it to help pay for the squares that are made on that day - People would be paying to post their own squares if it weren't for this event, so if we can get some spare change donations that will help.
And does anybody have a video camera? I don't.
okay heres a list of things that need to be dealt with
-printing posters, flyers, children's stories - Andrea's got this one covered, and for free!
-baskets, a couple of crochet hooks -Andrea is the multi-tasking hero again!
-kettles - I have one i can bring in, Andrea has a couple. (come to think of it, we will need a water source. Will ask Kirsten about that in a second)
-tea bags - Kirsten is giving us some tea, but if anybody else has tea they could bring that would be great - preferably not loose-leaf, that's something else all together that probably would be more of a hassle then its worth - regardless of how much I love loose leaf teas.
- tea tray - something that can house sugar/cream?milk/honey/ whatever else. This one hasnt been dealt with yet.
- yarn - I can't see how this is going to be a problem - If everybody brings in some yarn we should have more than enough. I'm not asking you to buy any if you don't want to, That's your own choice. If you are reluctant to buy yarn for this, then check out this website www.freecycle.org and although its difficult to navigate, make a posting for free yarn for a charity project and chances are somebody will have some for us.
- movie, blanket, table reservation, chairs - I'll do/have done these.
-needles - I have 5 pairs that were donated just the other day, they are in varying sizes. The more needles the better, if you have some that you could donate or just lend to the cause for the day that would be fantastic. the worst thing that could happen is if we have 20 interested knitters or crocheters and only four pairs of needles and three hooks.
the other thing about the yarn is that we will have to be careful to keep the balls/squares labeled as to what they are made of. Maybe we should label the baskets and try to keep wool in one, cotton in another, acrylic in another.... The majority of the yarn I can bring in is acrylic, with some cotton and very little wool - whatever I have depends entirely on whats been donated to me.
what about a set of cable needles? I am reluctant to include those because cables squares are so much more difficult to measure as the cables pull them together.
I was also given a "knitting dictionary" which is really old, but has a lot of good information in it about ~200 stitches, as well as a large section on crochet. It looks old and worn, but it's got a lot of good information in it so I'll bring it along and we can leave it out on the table for anybody who may need to double-check or look something up quickly. I don't really think it'll be used much, but if it helps out one person then its done its job.
Something else I just thought of - rulers. We should have a couple of rulers handy, so bring any spare rulers that are lying around -don't worry, you get to take them home again after.
