That is the cutest darned thing I've ever seen. I'm all for free-range chicken and eggs too, I look for them in the store. The eggs are usually only $1 more. Vegetarian fed hens makes for better eggs too. I did see an article from Australia once about a lot of penguins caught in an oil spill and people from around the world knit them woolly jumpers so they wouldn't catch cold and die. Now if somebody knits one for a cow I think that'd be going too far! But bravo for rescuing those hens. A battery life is no life for any animal. I won't eat veal bcs. of how that's produced. Those hens look very happy.

I haven't eaten chicken in over two years now, but i do still eat eggs. I am waiting for the day when I can keep chickens and get my own organic free-range eggs out of my backyard - It's not legal to keep chickens in your backyard in Toronto, but people already do it and for the most part get away with it. The law seems to be pretty understanding about what a good thing keeping chickens actually is and doesn't crack down hard on people who keep backyard chickens - after all, you get free insect control, free fertilizer, and a set of feathery little composters. Neighbours are generally pretty happy to receive free range eggs.
