See my post earlier about inexpensive wool at Michael's stores. I've also had luck buying wool yarn online, bidding on lots at ebay and also craigslist.com. You can also search the internet for wool yarn, sometimes sold in grab bags of different discontinued yarns. Paton and Lion make nice worsteds.
If you order some wool yarn online, it only takes a few days to arrive--and in the meantime you can knit up your acrylic or blend stash, which certainly won't go to waste! (Speaking of waste, check out thrift stores or charity closets for handknit sweaters or afghans that could be unraveled, washed gently, and reknitted into squares.)

I don't know where you are but I live in West Texas and I had to order Wool yarn over the internet because the stores around me don't carry it. I didn't want to wait to start so I am making Acrylic squares until my wool comes in. I have totes full of acrylic yarn.(they are excepting them) They are excepting all kinds of natural fibers including wool or wool blend yarns, acrylic yarns and bamboo, soy and cotton fibres. I hope this helps.

You could try putting a note in your church or synagogue or place of worship, bulletin requesting wool worsted weight yarn needed for charity projects. I ran a stitchers group at my church for three years. We put a notice in our bulletin and we recieved black plastic bags full of yarn all the while the group was in session ! Yarney

Another option to get wool/yarn is a request through freecycle.com. It is a recycling website to help keep unnecessary stuff out of our landfills.

Ooooo yes! I used freecycle in my area. Can't say I've ever got wool before, but I gave away a bed last year to a very grateful man who was very pleased to not have to sleep on his bedroom floor anymore! Two thumbs up to freecycle from me! www.freecycle.org/

So glad to be a part of this project! I live in a big city (Philadelphia) and there are knitting shops here that carry lovely wool yarns. I asked at one shop and they offered to put a notice on their website, (The Tangled Web), asking for donations of yarn. They also put a notice about knit-a-square.com. I have gotten several donations of wool yarn this way and am sharing them with my students who are learning to knit and knitting squares to help.

the knitters and crocheters of knit-a-square - it looks like we are going to single-handedly clear out every closet of unused and scrap yarn across the globe!
I have no idea what most of my yarns are made up of because they are grab-bags from craigslist and recycled clothing stores.
It's garage sale season soon - lots of people cleaning out their closets of old yarn there!

We are lucky, we have a sheep farm near here and they sell wool, spun and raw, wool roving etc. And the prices are decent. If you're in a livestock raising area it might do to check with the local sheep farms, they might be selling wool ready to spin or ready to knit with, right at the farms. Ours does.

I have also been going online to E-Bay and bidding on wool yarn but alot of it comes from China that I've seen and the shipping is $6.50-$8.99. It's pretty expensive but I figure that's just part of my charity giving. I've been getting some and doubling it up to make it real warm for these children. I also have asked about wool yarn on freecycle.com in my area and haven't had anyone respond so far. I just like the rest of you; I have 4-5 large totes full of acrylic (also some large bags) that I'm using also that I need to get rid of and it's gonna get used for blankets also and there are very bright and beautiful colors.!! I can just imaging how the children look at the colors and talk about the stitches among themselves and hug these blankets and feel so good that someone they don't even know cares about them! What a joy to be able to be a part of this! I work full time and have a greenhouse so I'm not able to do that many but I do as many as I can. Thanks everyone for the great input and have a wonderful day,

Hi All, I also posted this on the Canada thread... While I was searching the web for wool deals , I came across a web site for discount yarn, I contacted them, hoping we could purchase online . I am going to post their reply here. I don't know if this is close to where you are or not. Since I am in Washington State ... it would be a bit of a trip ! Hi Karen: Thank you for contacting us regarding your knitting needs. Your organization sounds absolutely wonderful. What a great way to help others and get such enjoyment out of it. The Spinrite Outlet Store is for in-store shopping only. We are an Outlet Store for the Manufacturers of Patons, Bernat, Lily and Phentex. As an outlet store, we do sell discontinued and clearance products at a considerable discount. We also have a large selection of mill ends that are also sold at a large discounted price. What I recommend (and I do for many charitable organizations) is to plan a visit during one of our two large Annual Sales Events. The next one is planned for August. This Sales Event is the largest of the year and boasts savings of over 85% off of SRP on some sale products. While we do have wonderful savings throughout the year that would benefit your group, at the Tent Sale in August, you will find savings on discontinued colours/products even larger. If you would like to receive a flyer for our upcoming events, please sign up to become an e-member at www.yarnfactoryoutlet.com. I sure wish I was closer... Talk about Heaven !!! If anyone is planing a trip or is close by, I hope this helps... Maybe we could do a buy in if someone finds a GREAT deal that is near them !

Wow that sounds amazing. Unfortunately I'm in the NW corner of Ontario, probably over a thousand miles away from where these stores are. DANG IT! But if I'm ever down there visiting relatives I for SURE am going to drop into one of those stores. Thanks for the heads up!
