I am new to this site and learning to crochet: In the crochet instructions, we are requested to finish off leaving a 3 yard tail for sewing up. That is 10 feet of yarn! Do we really need to leave that much?
Thank you, Patty

That was a misprint. You need a 2 1/2 to 3 foot tail.

In the "knit" portion of the site, they say "VERY IMPORTANT: Leave a two metre (2 and a bit yards) length of your yarn attached to your work after you have cast off. This will be used to join the squares together." I think you're safe with a 2 metre/6.5' tail.

I double checked this again for you too. Its defiantly 2 meters. The main reason for this is it leaves a little extra in case of knotting and if the next square doesn't have quite enough to go round

I too thought, "wow, that's long" but once I folded up that length within the folded over square it was no big deal and if they need the extra yarn, then I'm all for it.

For anybody else who is routinely knitting on the go - on average, your armspan is the same length as you are tall. No kidding - get a tape measure, try it out.
This means that is you don't happen to have a metre stick in you back pocket, you can figure out how many armspans of your own personal armspan length is about equal to two metres. 2 metres is 6.5 feet. I am 5 7" tall, so I know that I can hold the finished square in one hand and stretch out the yarn still attached to it in the other, and i have 5 7' of yarn, then just estimate another foot or so for the 2 metres.

Great idea! Everytime I pull out the measuring tape the cat attacks it and walks off with it!
