Tell me about it! There are so many times when I'm not busy at work and I think about all the things I could be crocheting instead! I thought about the "small parts" on your cats as well and wondered about sewing/embroidering eyes instead. That pattern is so cute... thank you for posting it.

Actually that's not a bad idea - sort of rag-doll type toys that can be given out to the children when they get their blankets. A blanket is certainly a good comfort, but everybody had a favorite stuffed toy - I still have mine.

Talking of cats; mine loves to lay on the couch between my husband and I while I'm knitting my squares and just watch and wait and then in the blink of an eye she catches my strand of yarn with her paw and my husband says; Get it Precious; Get it!! We just laugh at her; she 's a long white-haired persian and I know for sure that there's some white cat hair in the squares I've made!! So, part of my cat is in Soweto!!! Yes, and I work full time also and wish I had more hours to knit also but I'm not that close to retirement yet!!!

I'm sure if anyone gets the chance or time to knit/crochet a teddy then the little ones would be more then happy to be gifted one!
As it is I really should be studying at the moment but end up crocheting instead. These little squares are so much fun! But I must be firm with myself soon, test coming up!

We have had class presentations over the past two weeks - the presentation is about a group project from weeks ago, which was to go out into the community and do two days of volunteer/observation work to learn how these 'small acorns become big trees'. The last group to present today went to BOOST, which is a 'big tree' organization that helps stop child abuse. BOOST has a number of small items that are sold for fundraising, one of these being the BOOST bracelets. Now these are simple, easy to make little things, and here's the info on their website about what they stand for: Story of Boost Bracelet This unique and special bracelet tells the story of the journey of a child who is a survivor of abuse. Boost helps kids with all forms of abuse. The more help these kids get the better the world will be. Black symbolizes the dark times. Purple represents all forms of abuse. Green stands for Boost. Colourful beads represent the programs (assessment, treatment, education, training, child victim witness support, research, administration) at Boost. Heart charm symbolizes nurturing & caring support. Butterfly charm symbolizes a renewal of life (here, go see what they look like if you want, www.boostforkids.org/preventionGoPurple.asp)so the girls who did this presentation had a bag full of these things and handed them out to everybody in the class, to many gracious 'thankyou's' and 'awww thats so sweet!'. It's the only thing I could think about for quite some time - I have a totally unique and quite beautiful bracelet that means I am supporting BOOST to make a difference in some young child's life. In fact, my entire class has their own totally unique and beautiful bracelet - we are a community of ending child abuse supporters! I think I can draw on this idea for knit a square as well. I have already considered making a small square, maybe 1 1/2 or 2 inches in size, from the scraps of yarn that are too small for me to do anything with for myself. It would be a key chain, and something to remember the project by. Then it occurred to me that I could make dozens of these for everybody who is knitting squares, vests and hats for these children, and I could sell them for a few bucks and put the money straight back into the project again - either to buy yarn or to help towards me flying down there next year to do some serious sewing up volunteer work. the question is now - would anybody be interested in a little square? I can make little patterns in them or sew on the red ribbon symbol for AIDS. I'm thinking they would sell for like $3 or something, perhaps more if I am shipping them long distances. It wouldn't make a great deal of money, but it is just that little bit more help towards the goal. If theres enough interest I'll make one and post a photo.

Kyla, that's an awesome idea! Perhaps you could incorporate the colours of the South African flag: red, blue, green, black, yellow and white.

www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=95910Here's the link to my daughter's online shop, however I just checked and she's sold out except for one cat toy. Normally she's got 3-4 purses, several scarves, jewellery, cat toys and cushions for sale. Mind you she works at the Humane Society and they just had a parvo outbreak (couldn't find the cause, the animals are all vaccinated) and she had to drop everything to help with that. So I don't think she's had time to do anything in her spare time at all. Kyla that's a cool idea for a mini-square. It would definitely go on my key chain. I'd enjoy one in the colours of the South African flag for sure. About 8-10 of those squares, joined point to point (diamond shape) by yarn with maybe a plastic bead between each would make a great necklace for a child over there too and wouldn't cost much. I can get plastic beads (unbreakable) from the $1store here for really cheap. It shouldn't supplant the squares but it would be fun to include some in a package, so maybe later on, if you have time for the mini-squares, I'll buy some off you and make one up, see how it goes? Anyways it's only a thought, no pressure or hassles. Doesn't have to happen.

When you post pictures to this site you have to use a picture hosting site. I use; photobucket.com/Make yourself an account & add the pictures you want to post on here. Once you have added your picture it should give you a little code underneath starting with [ img }. Copy that & paste it in here and that should make the picture show up

I was in Costa Rica on a humanitarian/eco-tourism trip when I was sixteen, and we stayed with the locals on a pineapple/yucca farming cooperative.
The youngest child who lived in the little 12-home community was about two years old. We saw him out on the 'lawn' (there isn't really one, everybody faces the soccer field) waving a machete around, hacking at the ground. My teacher thought "okay, this is probably something we should alert mom to," and went inside the house to tell mom that her little son was playing with a machete almost the same size as he was.
She came outside and said something to the extent of 'oh that's okay! here, hold it like this," showed him how to hold it properly, and gave him a machete hacking 101 lesson. as far as we know, there were no damaged body parts as a consequence of this lesson.
safety concerns in other parts of the world - not the same as we have here.
Having said that, I do work in child care, and understand the horrifying choking hazard of small pieces. The general rule is if you can fit it through a toilet paper cardboard tube, it can fit in a throat.

okay, made some prototype key chains! I am not pleased with them 100% yet, I can't figure out how to make the AIDS awareness ribbon work out and not look stupid, but here's some photos. www.ravelry.com/projects/squareaday/key-chains
