In looking at the double crochet 8x8 square I was thinking depending on the puffiness or thinness of the yarn it could be abit hole-y, ie. not so warm, and I was thinking of using some boucle, or nubbly yarn, for the dc 8x8 square. Although the yarn itself is thin, the nubbles ;D have it bumped up to a bulky yarn listing. Anybody else tried these 8x8 squares with a nubbly yarn? How did it turn out? I got several balls of this yarn at clear-out prices so would like to use them up. I haven't found any brushed yarns, which would be lovely to fill any gaps in a double crochet square, perfect in fact. So if anybody's had any experience with nubbly acrylics, let me know how it went? If they don't work I'd like to know before I dive in as they are the very bleep to try to unravel. Thanks.

The blanket Zanny knitted me had many boucle Squares, they are very warm and cosy. Please use up the yarn, they will look lovely in a blanket. Different textures add interest too. I will be posting the book 'Heritage Blanket' to the site soon which talks about texture and patterns.

I've used nubbly acrylics before and they work great with dc. P.S. And I know how hard they are to unravel as well! I also find them hard to get started because I lose where my chain stitches are.

I've been using a half double crochet stitch for squares I made for another charity project. The half-double is tighter than the double crochet and makes a lovely fabric, still flexible. I've used it with nubbly yarn (Lion's Homespun) and both DK and worsted, switching needles sizes to suit.
I'm much more of a knitter than a crocheter, but for speed of making squares you can't beat crochet!

What great answers! Thank you all VERY much! Andrea I agree about not finding starting chain stitches. With the starting chain I don't think it's crucial if I miss a stitch or two while getting to the 8 inch width I need and on the next rows I use my middle finger and thumb on the hand holding the yarn to literally feel that space in the next stitch under the top threads, so I know where to insert my hook...I sure can't see it with a nubbly (slubbed) yarn! Not this one anyway. Crocheting by feel--it works for me.
