If I'm using a smooth yarn and find the dc or hdc stitches leaving gaps I don't like between the stitches (ie. less warm), I find the best solution so far is to drop down a hook size, like from 5mm to 4.5, size H to size G, stuff like that. It really makes the resulting yarn fabric much denser. Also if you have tiny scraps you are not sure what to do with, (and this is a perfect way to use the tiniest bright scraps of yarn up on a dark square), double up the bright yarn and weave it from corner to corner through those pesky corner chain 'gaps' right down through the square center (which often has a hole too!) and on out the other corner, securing it and presto, you just fancied up the square, used up the scrap and made it warmer to boot! Imagine how the scraps colours would "pop" used against a black or brown or grey yarn square you were hesitating sending to the children because they are such dark/dull colours? I mean some really snazzy colour combos come to mind and garage sale season is just starting up and people are always dumping their drabber yarn colours. All I've got to do is use some brightly variegated or even neon colour yarn scraps and we're off to the races, heh heh heh.
